Tipping the scales at kg and capable of speeds in excess of kmh the bike was as beautiful as it was unusual. Designed by BMW for serious off-road use, the idea of taking such a big, powerful, and expensive bike off-road was something most riders would certainly think twice about. With shortish tracks more suited to two-strokes than cc twins, BMW were nevertheless keen to show that the HP2 was not just a dirt bike in name only.

So when we were invited to try out one of their monster Boxer twins at one of the rounds… well, how could we refuse? Also true was the fact that BMW were no longer as focused on building a competitive all-singing, all-dancing HP2 racer as they once were — due to the imminent arrival of the production model cc sports enduro bike which sadly turned out to be a bit of a white elephant….

Ultimately, with the bike capable of such high speeds finding a balance between suspension that gave the rider positive track feedback and suspension that could soak up square edged bumps at 80kmh was difficult balancing act. When used as a serious off-road bike the HP2 did have several clear disadvantages. Those engines were about two kilograms lighter than standard.

We just tried to reduce the weight of the bike as much as possible for serious off-road competition. The weight of the bike could be reduced further by about 10 kilos if needed.

We had more than enough stopping power from the standard brake system but we also used the Megamoto twin-disc set-up if we needed to. We also used a smaller, lighter thinner wall-thickness fuel tank at times.

Along with a carbon-fibre airbox, which was 1kg lighter than standard, we also used some titanium bolts. The sumpguard was also a little different to standard because we did have some problems with it, not with the faster riders but with the average riders who were jumping and landing heavily on the sump with little forward motion.

If there was one thing that was needed to really extract the very best from an HP2, it was wide open spaces and flowing gravel tracks. Sounding more like a WRC rally car than a dirt bike, the noise it emitted was truly exquisite. A deep, rich and lively sound, it set the heart racing and reminded you just how much power this bike had. With the standard clutch and front brake system as well as the original instrument panel still in place, the view forwards was the same as on any HP2.

It was noticeably stronger throughout, with a solid start to the power, which built progressively into a monster midrange and finished in a final flourish of terrifying top-end.

If you wanted more, you were definitely in the wrong sport. And with a great deal of body English, a dollop of opposite lock and a big handful of throttle, the brutal Beemer would exit the turn trailing a thirty-foot flurry of roost. Whatever the reason, it was a remarkable achievement. While the shock felt much more progressive and much better suited to the sort of hammering it was getting keeping the rear end of the bike highthe forks still felt surprisingly plush for a bike of this size.

And although the bike can get up all but the most technical climbs, it is again the size and weight of the HP2 that limited what it was capable of. They are rare, exclusive and attract owners as unique as the bikes themselves. I own a HP2 Enduro. When I meet other owners of the HP2, I can sense the passion and excitement that they have about it. Often times they even own more than one. Why do these people seem to have such an obsession with the HP2? Below is our interview with Sepp, in its entirety. We included all of it in hopes that his answers would shed light on questions other enthusiasts may have about the program.

This does not only mean high engine output, but also the highest performance of the motorcycle as a whole. HP stands for exclusive products developed for customers who want a motorcycle which is built in exclusive numbers and with high-quality components. HP models often also exclusively feature technical innovations e. The 2 stands for two, the 4 stands for four cylinders.

It also stands for a broad range of HP Performance parts and HP Race parts to further enhance the performance of and to personalize our standard models. The idea of an HP motorcycle had already been haunting enthusiasts for 20 years by the time the first HP model was brought on the way.

BMW Motorrad still keeps a few prototypes, some of which were partly of private nature. But only with the back then new flat twin generation did BMW Motorrad have the technical basis for manufacturing a truly convincing bike on a production basis. All earlier ideas and attempts had to make too many compromises and were never fully convincing. But then the time had come for such a motorcycle by BMW Motorrad.

BMW HP2 SPORT (2008 - 2012) Review

To highlight the sporting enduro qualities of the new HP2 EnduroBMW Motorrad supported and managed private racing teams which entered the HP2 Enduro in various off-road events around the world. This more or less also counts for all other HP models that followed.

More than any other motorcycle, the HP2 Enduro capitalised in full on rough terrain on the benefits of the Boxer concept with its low centre of gravity. But at the same time the HP2 Endurowith its almost playful handling, low weight, and high-performance power unit, offered supreme riding pleasure also on the road. So considering the many options it offers the rider, the HP2 Enduro was by that time the most powerful and by far the best off-road Boxer of all times.

The development of the motorcycle took three years. RW: What were the initial goals? What did you hope to accomplish with these bikes? We also wanted to show the customers, that although we are proud that our best selling models like the R GS for example cover a broad variety of riding challenges, we are also able to develop motorcycles with a very sharp profile and clear focus on the intended use — making no compromises.

With the HP program, BMW Motorrad offers motorcycles designed and built without compromises for the highest standards of performance, quality, and exclusivity.

The High Performance accessories line follows the same principle, enabling the really demanding rider of a BMW motorcycle to enjoy an utmost standard of function with even greater sporting orientation, individual design and optical tuning.

With all components being perfectly matched to one another, together with the wide range of fine and well-conceived details, riding pleasure of the highest calibre is guaranteed. BMW High Performance motorcycles are truly outstanding: exclusive and authentic, they will always remain relatively rare. To show its exclusivity, each motorcycle of the HP4 for example is issued with its own HP4 serial number which is engraved indelibly in the upper fork bridge.

RW: What was the development process like? This also counts for all other HP models that followed. Each HP model is being developed by a highly motivated team, which provides special knowledge of the very niche the model aims at. The development team of the HP2 Enduro for example featured people with good knowledge of and passion for Enduro racing.

The HP2 Sport project team consisted of on-road racing enthusiasts and real racers.It's a reflection right down to the roots. And at the same time, the starting signal for something entirely new. It is certainly no coincidence that the first machine in the HP range is based on the GS. The exceptional Boxer made its way through the dessert too successfully.

The reputation of the street motorcycle that can also go offroad was too good. HP stands for High Performance, the 2 stands for the number of cylinders of the Boxer engine, Enduro is self-explanatory. Inthe standard machine built in Berlin entered the market — and set the trend. On that basis, it is uncompromisingly trimmed to offroad racing: lighter, more agile, and sportier. For the development into a thoroughbred off-road sports bike, a great deal of weight had to be lost, making the HP2 Enduro a mere This corresponds with the clarified target: building an Enduro that unites the weight from the eighties with the performance and technology of today.

There are no specifications and no gatekeepers. There is only one thing that remains consistent: High Performance. A motorcycle for those that tear their way at full speed ahead over the gravel — leaving nothing but a cloud of dust in their wake. When project manager Markus Theobald's team is put to the test, the competition and the customers are amazed. With dynamism as the foremost maxim emerging from the boxer engine and continuing on into every little detail.

As extreme as the HP2 Enduro itself is the acceleration under which it is tested. At the German Cross Country championships GCCit demonstrates its off-road capabilities just as much as it does at the infamous Baja California dessert race or the Austrian Erzberg rodeo. The latter is considered to be one of the harshest Enduro races in the world and a breeding ground for talented offroad riders.

Berthold Hauser is taking part live as a motorsport boss, when his riders provide for sensations at the Erzberg rodeo. InSimo Kirssi dominates the Iron Road prologue with the HP2 Enduro and repeats his performance in with a victory in the champions league and in the prologue. The HP2 Enduro really stands out from the starting grid of well over a thousand participants against the small, agile Enduros. It climbed the steep slopes with such an incredible pull that we all said: That's incredible.

Share this page.I decided to run this Flashback Friday piece on the BMW HP2 Sport after being informed that well-known Queensland motorcycle enthusiast Ian Hopkins has one for sale still brand new, never ridden, as he thins out his extensive collection of motorcycles up in Cairns.

It is the fastest, sportiest and lightest Boxer-engined sport bike yet, and BMW say it is ready for the road or track. The BMW HP2 Sport is aimed at purist sports riders and is equipped with many racetrack derived features proven in endurance racing during Some parts, such as the race shift for the close ratio gearbox, forged alloy wheels and MotoGP inspired dashboard are making their first appearance in a BMW series production machine.

But there are significant mechanical differences, along with a new, race-ready composite carbon fibre body, race wheels and optional switchable ABS. To allow the new HP2 motor to rev so high BMW has evolved a new cylinder head valve gear design for the double overhead camshaft layout, now using a drag lever for valve actuation.

Bigger valves are also used. In addition, the double spark plug arrangement used recently on R series machines has been replaced with a single plug per cylinder thanks to radially arranged valves that provide a very compact combustion chamber design.

Further modifications include porting for intake and outlet flows along with new forged pistons and connecting rods, all of which help the engine to rev higher and deliver more power. Externally the engine changes are announced via new carbon cylinder head covers fitted with easy-to-replace slip pads made from PA6 hard plastic, an indication of the expected hard cranked over cornering riding style. A new stainless steel exhaust system is placed below the engine for the first time, while the silencer is of a particularly striking design.

The rerouted two-into-one pipes keep the underside of the bike clear giving even more clearance for heavily banked high speed cornering. Designed to thrill performance riders, the HP2 Sport comes with a new BMW feature, a race shift that incorporates advanced electronic control to allow the quickest possible gearshifts. The standard setting is for the rider to use the gear-shifter only, to move up the gearbox.

By keeping the throttle open and ignoring the clutch lever, the rider can simply shift up with his foot. The benefit is quicker shifting and thus faster acceleration. Sophisticated electronics automatically sense the up-shift motion from the shifter and cut the ignition momentarily allowing the shift to take place when the engine is not under load.

If the rider uses the clutch lever a traditional clutched up-change is effected. The default mode is race shift for switching between the six close ratio cogs. The race shift can also be optionally ordered with a reverse pattern shift and associated software specifically for competition use. A double sliding piston set up is used at the rear. Braided steel brake lines are used for optimum performance. The instrument cluster is all digital and is based on a MotoGP set-up, delivering the traditional speed and rev information along with useful race data such as lap times, etc.Make BMW.
